No Beta, Mo’ Better

April 13, 2006 | In News & Announcements |

We are happy to announce the general release of Checkout Manager. With this release, we have resolved the major known issues. For a list of resolved issues, please check out our release notes. Thanks to all of the merchants who participated in the beta release and helped identify issues.

This release of Checkout Manager also includes a few new features:

  • Customize PayPal payment pages directly in Checkout Manager
  • Ability to customize field labels and display of fields on the Order Review, Order Confirmation and Order Status pages
  • Set a minimum order value
  • Set a maximum order value

New merchants will have Checkout Manager by default. Merchants using the version 1 or version 2 checkout flows (also called the old and new checkout) are encouraged to test their custom checkout pages and enable Checkout Manager when ready.

Merchants can also take advantage of the PayPal Express Checkout integration in Checkout Manager to provide buyers with the option of using PayPal as a payment method. Checkout Manager now allows you to even customize the header image, and header and page background color  of PayPal payment pages.

The best part for all merchants is that Checkout Manager makes it easy to make changes and offers almost total control over elements in your checkout pages. Merchants can easily push out changes to test their impact on increasing conversion rates.

Keep in mind that it may be easier to convert your existing visitors into buyers than to attract more qualified visitors.

  1. This is all great information, but I have a Legacy Store and I find it extremely daunting to convert my existing checkout pages to something new with Checkout Manager. I want to improve the checkout experience for my customers, but it looks like a giant headache! It would be really helpful if you could show some conversion examples for us “old timers” who are hesitant to make some of these changes.

  2. Sounds like a great topic for a future post. Thanks for the comment.

  3. How can this be called a release with all major known problems fixed.
    1. When you click to Enable Checkout Manager, you still get the Beta Warning.
    2. Minimum pcs per product is still not recognized.

I told YahooStore about the minimum piece problem in 2005, they acknowledged it, but it still has not been corrected.

  4. Why haven’t you fixed the minimum peices per product problem in the new checkout (version 3)?

  5. The Beta label on the Enable Checkout Manager page was an oversight on our part. We removed beta labels from numerous places but we missed that one—thanks for pointing it out. It has been added to the known issues.

The Minimum-quantity feature also appears on the known issues list. This issue will be resolved in an upcoming release.

  6. “Ability to customize field labels and display of fields on the Order Review, Order Confirmation and Order Status pages”
Could you please explain that better I couldn’t find any information on it.

Also I requested the ability to change the Section names to be something more relevant. With a combined billing and shipping page the section still reads shipping when it should say shipping/billing so can’t that be a variable which we can define?

    Thanks,
    Kambiz

  7. Before the recent release, when you went to the Page Configuration module, the Page Sections area of the Order Review, Status, and Confirmation page showed that no sections or fields could be edited. Now you can select a field on any of these pages and edit the text of the field. For example, the Order Confirmation section is labeled “Order Confirmation” by default. You could add to or replace this text with something such as “Order Confirmation—We Appreciate Your Business”. You can also add new fields to the Order Review page, and even add text or hidden fields to the Confirmation and Status pages. That’s what we mean by the ability to customize field labels and display of fields on the Order Review, Confirmation, and Status pages. Read more about custom fields.

I looked at your combined Shipping and Billing page and I assume by “section label” you mean the progress indicator that appears just below your header which currently reads “shipping”. You can change the text for that graphic by going to Visual Customization, select “Configurable Styles”, select the Progress Indicator tab, and changing the text for the first progress indicator label from the default “Shipping” to the text you wish to display. Read more about customizing progress indicators.

  8. Hello,

Thank you for that great information. The indicators was exactly what I was looking for and told that it wasn’t a variable by support when I had called a few weeks ago.

I’m now trying to get the variables which are available on the order confirmation page to work properly. This article can be found at http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/manage/checkout/checkout-65.html

I noticed that orderTotal and orderSubTotal were returning the same value when using the save & preview function on the checkout manager. I need to confirm that the orderTotal will really be the order total and the orderSubTotal be the true sub total. Could you please check this for me? I was using a simple javascript to do a document.write with the variables in a preview to test this.

    Thanks,
    Kambiz

  9. We just tested this here and subtotal and total return different (and correct) values based on our test order. This is actually a limitation of preview which is not an exact functional representation of checkout page behavior. In order to test functional elements (such as links, JavaScript, etc), you need to place a test order (either by setting the test cookie if not enabled, or going through your checkout flow).

Just remember to cancel any test orders as these will be counted when calculating your transaction fees.

  10. We switched to the new checkout manager but had to switch back due to the min quantities issue. Any projection when the min quantities issue will be resolved?

  11. The fix for this issue is already planned for an upcoming release.

  12. In the new Checkout Manager there is no option to wrap it in your default store template. Just for that I am still using the old Checkout (Order Form)

  13. Menachem,

It’s true that Checkout Manager does not use the norder template to wrap the shopping cart page. However, with the older checkout flows only the shopping cart page is customizable. Checkout Manager allows you to customize ALL checkout pages to have a header, footer, and side bar regions. Merchants wishing to wrap the cart page can insert HTML from their Editor-built pages into Checkout Manager to create the same effect.

  14. I understand that, however it is a lot more complicated than it was.

Is this something that Yahoo! Stores may offer in the future? It would make things so much simpler.

    Thanks.

  15. Merchants overwhelmingly requested greater control over customizing checkout pages. The older checkout flows, while using the norder template in the Store Editor, allowed control only over the cart page structure. So while it made customizing the cart page easy, there was no way to customize all other checkout pages.

Checkout Manager makes it very easy to customize all of the elements (headlines, borders, colors, etc) of all of the pages in a checkout flow–control not possible in older checkout flows. Checkout Regions for the header and footer allow merchants to cut and paste HTML from their site into any or all checkout pages. So while there is an extra step of finding, copying and pasting any HTML for header, side bar, or footer regions, we believe that Checkout Manager is a fundamental improvement over older checkout flows.

  16. It definately is an improvement, and it seems to work very well. It just is more complicated. It would be really great if it would automatically wrap the whole checkout process in the default template.

    Thanks.
